Question Four

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for my music magazine is both male and female teens. The age of the buyer will be 16 – 21; this genre is quite recent to the music scene therefore not many of the older population would appreciate this type of genre, whereas it will appeal to the majority of the younger ages. At the ages of 16 – 21 you’d be able to read swear words in magazines without thinking anything of it as you’re going through the grown up stages. I intend on writing provocative content which is why I chose this age range; the magazine will also consist of controversial images. The audience for the magazine will be preferably read by a percentage of 58% males and 42% females. This is the chosen percentage because females tend to listen to various amounts of music genres e.g. pop, alternative, R&B and indie, whereas males tend to listen to one or maybe even two specific music genres. Although this is my specified percentage, the magazine is premeditated for both genres; this allows my magazine to have a wider target audience allowing there to be a larger readership resulting in more revenue and more profit coming in from the magazine. Although when it comes to music magazines with this genre the percentage of males is vastly more than females. The male readerships are usually around 72% and females 28%; I didn’t go for this percentage as I wanted to individualise my magazine; making is a more neutral based magazine for both genres.
The social class is an aspect of my magazine that will be miscellaneous. Alternative music doesn’t tend to have a specific social class; anyone from any part of the world, from any background can listen to this genre…there are no restrictions. I chose the social class ABC1 as the main target audience due to its wide variety of classes and how high priced the magazine is.

Question Three

What kind of institution might distribute your media product and why?

Bauer Media Group would distribute my magazine as they operate in 16 countries worldwide, which means they are successful and well known would wide. They distribute magazines such as Q and Kerrang; these magazines are well known and are thriving magazines even till this moment not forgetting they are still gaining more readers. NME is one of my magazines biggest competitors and using Bauer Media Group would give my magazine an equal chance to gain more readers seeing as it’s done a good job with the magazines it produces. Using Bauer Media Group also means people Q or Kerrang would consider reading my magazine; in the best scenario my magazine would convert other magazine readers into being monthly readers of my magazine. NME is a big competitor of my magazine; using this distributor allows my magazine to offer more magazine conventional types of media products such as a radio and TV station.

Bauer Media is Europe’s largest privately owned publishing Group. The Group is a worldwide media empire offering over 300 magazines in 15 countries, as well as online, TV and radio stations.

Bauer Media is a multi-platform UK-based media Group consisting of many companies collected around two main divisions – Magazines and Radio - widely recognised and rewarded as being industry innovators.

Their business is built on influential media brands with millions of personal relationships with engaged readers and listeners. Their strategy is to connect audiences with excellent content through our broad multi-touch point brand platforms, wherever and whenever and however they want. Their wide portfolio of influential brands gives us advantages over pure play magazine or radio competitors.

Our magazine heritage stretches back to 1953 with the launch of Angling Times and the acquisition in 1956 of Motor Cycle News, both still iconic brands within our portfolio. This means that the company is able to keep businesses going regardless of how long they have been around for. They’re able to keep businesses relevant which reflects well on my magazine as it means my magazine will carry on selling

The company’s radio business began in 1990 with the acquisition of London dance station Kiss FM (now called Kiss 100), followed by the acquisition of Liverpool's Radio City and later by TWC and the Metro Group. Then came the acquisition of Melody FM which was transformed into the market-leading Magic 105.4.

Today, Bauer Media spans over 80 influential brand names covering a diverse range of interests including heat – the must have weekly celebrity title, Parkers,MATCH!, CAR and Yours. For a full list our powerful brands.

Bauer Media is a sister company of H Bauer Publishing, publisher of the UK's biggest TV listings, Take a Break and Bella.

Question Two

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The musicians in my magazine are represented as care free, people who don’t think twice before they talk; like to be controversial and don’t care what people assume/think about them. My artists swear, like to be provocative not forgetting loud. This in matter of fact represents my magazine genre of alternative music. The lyrics written in alternative music is provocative, meaningful and more or less lyrics that have no boundaries. Alternative artists aren’t afraid to write/say what they want; which is what my magazine is illustrating through the main artist the issue is written about. Xandria is a representation of the alternative genre and what the target audience acts like/would like to be like. Xandria represents the social group that doesn’t care what they look like, what they wear or how they are represented. It’s a care free genre that doesn’t like to be conventional, meaning they aren’t the ‘hipster’ generation and like to be individual.

The types of clothes my main artists is wearing is clothes you would find in urban outfitters. Urban Outfitters is a store my target audience would love to shop; Urban Outfitters offers alternative clothing that you wouldn’t find in stores like new look. The clothes are unique and eccentric...this matches with the genre perfectly. Using props like an acoustic guitar and electric guitar relates to the target audience; the magazine’s target audience is one that is so into their music they are likely to play a musical instrument, write their own songs and even sing them.
